Which, as you can hopefully guess, is a pretty important part of your car. So, let’s begin with just the stabilizer bar, which is also often called the sway bar. You might even hear it called an anti-roll bar. Cars usually have two stabilizer bars: One in the back and one in the front. So, the stabilizer bar does exactly what the name suggests: It stabilizes. The sway bar runs across the bottom of the car, where it connects to the frame of the car. It connects to the frame on both the left and the right side, essentially holding the two sides together, so that they can move in unison. As you turn one way or the other, the car begins to roll in that direction, compressing or extending the wheels in the process. The stabilizer bar helps straighten the wheels out as you come out of the turn. That’s kind of crucial for safety. That’s the bulk of what the stabilizer bar does, but it’s not all of it. It also helps keep your car stable when you drive over imperfections in the road. All right, moving on. Let’s discuss the links. The links are how the stabilizer bar attaches to the suspension. Each stabilizer bar has a pair of links, which bolt right on to the suspension system. Like so many parts of your car, the links can eventually give out, due to lots of wear and tear. When that happens, they’ll need to be replaced, though they don’t need to be replaced in pairs.
Hopefully you’ll notice when your car doesn’t drive the way it normally does. You certainly should notice. And that should wave some warning flags in your head. If your car’s front stabilizer bar links call out sick, then the bar will be able to move back and forth more than in should. The entire purpose of the sway bar is that it doesn’t move, which stabilizes the car. If it isn’t able to do that, then it will be reflected in the handling of the car.
If your car’s front stabilizer bar links are wearing out, they’ll start to talk to you. There are two different noises that busted links will make: A popping noise or a knocking noise. Both of these noises will be heard primarily during times that your car uses the stabilizer bar, such as when making sharp turns or when driving over bumps in the road.
