What are Battery Terminals?

You’re in luck, because battery terminals are pretty basic.

The terminal is actually two parts: the protruding portion of the battery and the terminal connector or clamp that slides over it. The connector is the part that’s replaceable. Both can be cleaned to removed corrosion that causes electrical resistance.

Your car has two battery terminals, and if they don’t work then your battery isn’t properly connected to your car. And if your battery isn’t hooked up, then…well, how’d it go when you tried to turn on the TV without any batteries in the remote? Not so hot, huh?

Symptoms of faulty Battery Terminals

Warning light

Let’s start with the good stuff, and by “good stuff” I mean “the reminder that you really, truly need.” Don’t ignore your warning lights. Yes, they may look like emojis you text to your friends, but they’re really important. If your battery or charging light is illuminated, well you might have a terminal issue. And trust me. You won’t be happy if you ignore that one.

Car won’t start

When you go to turn on your car, the battery sends electricity to the starter motor, which in turn cranks the engine enough to get things going. If the battery terminals are preventing battery power from getting to the starter, your car won’t turn on. It may shock you to learn this, but if your car won’t turn on, you can’t really drive it.

Trouble turning on

This is pretty much the same as the “car won’t start” symptom, just with your terminals hanging on to a thread of life. Spoiler: they can’t hold on for long.

Visible corrosion

Your battery is pretty easy to spot when you open the hood. And sometimes the terminals will look like that leftover sandwich you left in the fridge that turned into a moldy, frumpy mess. When the terminals look like that, they have corrosion, and might not do their job.

Diminished electricity in the car cabin

When your engine isn’t running, but you’re still using the electrical components in the cabin, you’re relying on electricity from the battery. So if the lights are dimming like in the beginning of a horror flick, don’t worry: you’re not in for an eerie ending. You just have battery issues, which may be the result of the terminals.

How urgent is a Battery Terminal replacement?

Seeing as the battery is pretty important for making your car actually drivable…you’ll probably want to get those faulty battery terminals replaced if you plan on driving.
