What is an Ignition Coil?

Do you want to keep the spark alive between you and your car?

Well, the ignition coil keeps that spark alive and well!

Okay, let’s give you a quick and dirty car lesson.

There are three primary things required for your engine to run: spark, compression and an air/fuel mixture. The ignition coils deal with the spark side of things. Remember how we talked about spark? That ignition coil (s) creates the conditions necessary to produce a literal spark that starts the power cycle in your engine. Pretty powerful stuff, right? I mean, literally.

When functioning properly, this puppy keeps your engine purring real nice. Whoa, sorry for the referencing both a cat and a dog in the same sentence. Just trying to unite the divide between cat lovers and dog lovers.

Ignition coils tend to be located on top of the engine. And without them, you can pretty much say goodbye to any vroom-vroom action. Which is kind of why you have a car, right?

It’s not that rare for ignition coils to fail, as they get a whole lot of wear and tear. But don’t worry, there’s good news. Replacing your ignition coil is usually a pretty straightforward service. Which is good, because you kind of need them.

Symptoms of a failing Ignition Coil

Poor performance

If you notice sputtering while driving, or jiggling when the car is stopped, then it may be time to take a look at those ignition coils. Look, you may not be cast in the next Fast and the Furious, but we all know you have a lot of fun with your right foot when you’re driving. So, pay attention when your foot is being insulted by some poor engine performance.

Car won’t start

It’s possible that your car might not even wake up from its nap when you go to start it. That kind of makes the car useless, right? Now imagine your car refusing to start right before an important event that you’re running late to…

Warning lights

Is it Christmas? Nope. Then why are all these lights on? Look, I’m trying to make this sound fun and cheerful, because I know the truth. You’re no fan of warning lights. Well, break that habit. Your warning lights are there to let you know when something has gone awry, so you can fix it before you have a bigger and more expensive problem on your hands. If your car is lighting up the check engine warning light, or any ignition-related light, then you could have an ignition coil issue on your hands.

How urgent is an Ignition Coil replacement?

This repair is pretty urgent because the ignition coils don’t last very long once they show signs of failure. They’ll give you a little bit of a warning time, but then just like that, they’re dead.

Like I mentioned, I wouldn’t want you to be stranded at time you need your car the most, so it’s best to get your ignition coils replaced immediately.
