What is a Lower Radiator Hose?

You know when you watch a sports game, and it looks like an athlete’s body is smoking? That’s them cooling down. And yes, it’s kind of cool. Anyway, that’s what the lower radiator hose does. Just like those athletes, it wants to be recognized for its physical prowess. Okay, got your pen and paper out? Let’s do a quick and dirty rundown of your car’s cooling system. So, your car needs to cool down, right? There’s a lot of friction and hard work going on there, and as you hopefully know, friction plus hard work equals overheating. So, your car uses coolant to cool down. Coolant is a liquid that circulates around the engine, absorbing heat from the motor. The coolant then travels to the radiator, where the heat is absorbed from the liquid. That lowers the temperature of the coolant, which allows it to return to the engine and absorb more heat. And it goes on and on and on. Now the coolant can’t magically get from the engine to the radiator, or from the radiator to the engine. You might guess that that’s where radiator hoses come in. You would be right. Your car has two radiator hoses. The lower hose, which is the one you care about since you’re reading this article, carries the coolant from the radiator to the engine. The upper hose is what brings it back to the radiator. Now, the hose is made of a highly durable rubber, but it’s still a hose, and if you’ve ever had a garden, you know that hoses don’t last forever. Wear and tear can cause the rubber to wear down, grow brittle, crack, or even rip. You’re not repairing a hose, so get ready to replace it.

Symptoms of a failing Lower Radiator Hose

Leaks

Imagine your lower radiator hose like a straw. If a straw breaks at all, it will leak when doing its job. And if a radiator hose is failing, then it will begin to leak. And your car will start to lose coolant. The area under your car should look clean and dry. So, keep an eye out for puddles underneath your car.

Poor engine performance

Look, nobody likes to work out when it’s blazing hot out. Your car is no different. A failing lower radiator hose can stop coolant from keeping your car cool. Suddenly it’s hot, and doesn’t want to work out, and for a good reason. But unlike you, it will try anyway. And the result is an engine that isn’t cooling down properly, which can lead to diminished performance. Do you like poor engine performance? No? Okay then. Try paying attention when your car isn’t driving right.

Notably damaged

Engine is overheating

Here’s a fun fact about your car: It has indicators for a reason. One of the indicators next to your speedometer displays the temperature of the engine. It’s super handy. The thermometer shouldn’t show that your engine is too hot. An engine that is too hot is a liability. It won’t run well, it can cause severe damage. If your lower radiator hose fails, the engine won’t be able to be cooled properly, and you’ll end up with an engine that, if driven long enough, will start to overheat. So, when you see that temperature gauge rising high, you’ve got a problem. Pay attention to it.
