What is a Coolant Flush?

Let’s spell out the obvious: A flush involves removing the old coolant from your cooling system and refilling the system with fresh antifreeze products. The cooling system flushing procedure is considered preventative maintenance to protect vital parts of your engine, like the radiator. As such, the flush should be performed according to the manufacturer’s service schedule. There are a couple of different ways a mechanic can flush your cooling system. The first involves flushing everything with a dedicated machine. Another manual flush method involves draining and refilling the cooling system. Why should you have your car’s cooling system flushed on a regular basis? Well, if not serviced regularly, coolant breaks down, becomes corrosive, and eventually eats away at metal components throughout the engine, radiator and cooling system. The mixture of deteriorated coolant and metal debris eventually turns to gunk that can clog up the cooling system, leading to overheating. And that can cause big-time damage to both your engine, radiator water pump and your wallet.

Signs you need a Coolant Flush

Routine service

Don’t wait until your coolant is discolored and funky looking. Make sure to flush your antifreeze coolant at the time and mileage recommended by the automaker.

Dirty-looking coolant

In some cases, if the coolant goes long enough without service, it will start to darken and become brownish in color. But you don’t want to let it get to that point. That’s why you should have your coolant flushed per the recommended service schedule.

Gunk build-up

If you’ve got antifreeze gunk build-up in your radiator or radiator hose, your car is long overdue for a coolant flush. Deteriorated coolant becomes acidic and eats away at metal cooling system components in your radiator and other parts of the engine. Eventually, the un-flushed coolant/debris mixture, in your radiator, turns into a brown sludge that can clog vital parts in your radiator hose and other parts of your engine, leading to engine overheating. A good routine flush of your antifreeze coolant system helps us avoid this problem.

How urgent is a Coolant Flush?

Your car isn’t going to break down immediately if you’re a couple of days overdue for a coolant flush. But the coolant system flush service is something you need to have done on a routine basis to prevent damage to your car’s radiator, engine, water pump and overall cooling system.
