What does a Check Engine Light mean?

In short, it means pay attention.

Look, we all know the drill. The check engine warning light comes on, and it feels generic, and a little bit goofy. It looks like a graphic on a kid’s toy, and it doesn’t really feel urgent.

So, you ignore it. And you keep ignoring it, thinking it will go away.

Guess what? It’s not going to go away. You can cross your fingers all you want, but it’s there, until the issue is resolved.

The check engine warning light is kind of a catch all for everything that can go wrong with your car. A large number of issues can ultimately result in the light illuminating. You might think that vagueness makes the light less important. You’re wrong.

That said, sometimes the issue is minor. In fact, the light can even come on if your gap cap isn’t screwed on properly, so, uhh…check that before you freak out.

Ultimately, the check engine light is like a grim grab bag at a party. It could be absolutely anything. A lot of the issues are minor, but some – such as transmission problems, engine mechanical issues, and computer malfunctions – are a bit more serious. The check engine light is designed to pop on for anything that leads to increased vehicle emissions (issues like an overheating engine or slipping transmission can lead to increased emissions.)

So stop doing that thing you do where you ignore it.

How to spot a Check Engine Light

Warning lights are illuminated

Well, that was pretty straightforward, wasn’t it? I’m hoping you could have gotten there on your own. But it’s important to pay attention to more than just your check engine light. Often times, mechanical issues will cause multiple lights to come on. If, say, your charging light is on and your check engine light is on, then you probably don’t have two problems. You probably just have an issue with your charging system.

How urgent is a Check Engine Light?

Did you miss that whole spiel earlier? It’s important. Ignore the check engine warning light at your own risk. It could be a transmission, engine, or electronics issue, that, if ignored, leads to serious damage and a huge dent in your wallet. Not to mention, it could be a serious safety issue.

Ignoring your check engine light is like ignoring your parents. It might seem cool, but eventually you’ll realize it’s a really bad idea.
