What is a Brake System Flush?

Let’s start with what the brakes do, and why they’re important. Wait. Do we really need to do that? You do know what brakes are, and why they’re kind of important, yeah? Okay, good. Then let’s move on to how the brake system actually works. The brakes in your car are powered by a hydraulic system. When you depress the brake pedal, brake fluid runs through tubes to the brake calipers. The calipers force the brake pads to clamp down on the brake rotors, which slows down the car’s wheels. That, in turn, slows and stops the car. Didn’t know that your brake system uses fluid? You’re not alone. But it does, and the fluid provides the pressure necessary to make the brake system function. Yet like most fluids in your car, the brake fluid needs to be replaced eventually, usually as a preemptive measure. Brake fluid can go funky by slowly picking up some hitchhikers that it shouldn’t pick up. Water in the fluid can cause corrosion and lessen the efficacy of the entire brake system. And dirt, metal, or rubber debris in the fluid is...well you can probably guess that it’s not good. It damages the entire brake system. So what’s a flush? Well, to ensure that your brake system always has healthy brake fluid, a flush removes all the fluid from the lines, and replaces it with new, clean fluid. Simple as that.

When do you need a Brake System Flush?

Spongy Brakes

Can I safely assume that “spongy” is not an adjective that you want associated with your car? Over time, water will accumulate in the brake fluid, and the result will be a spongy feel when you press on the brake pedal. Not a great feeling.

Poor brake performance

Here’s something that I sincerely hope you don’t need to be told: When your brakes aren’t performing up to their usual standards, something is wrong, and that something needs to be fixed immediately. Diminished brake performance can mean that the brake fluid is contaminated and needs to be flushed. It’s more likely to mean something else in the brake system is struggling - such as the calipers, rotors, or pads - but it could mean that it’s time for a good ol’ flush.

Funky looking fluid

Is it also safe to assume that you're not checking your brake fluid on the daily? No judgement here, but if you - or, more likely, a mechanic - does check the brake fluid and notices that it’s brown, black, or sludgy, then it's probably time for a flush.

How urgent is a Brake System Flush?

If you made it through this entire article and don’t yet realize how important your brakes are, then it might be time to head back to Driver’s Ed.

Brakes are important, and that includes the fluid. If you don’t get your system flushed when you need to, the fluid will decrease the ability of your brakes, while also breaking down and corroding the entire system.

This one’s a no-brainer. If you need to get your brake system flushed, get it flushed.
