What are Brake Pad Sensors?

What are Brake Pad Sensors? You know that friend you keep around because they’re smart and responsible…when you’re not being smart or responsible? Yeah, that friend is pretty important. Your car’s brake pad sensors are that friend, but for your brake pads. The whole purpose of the sensors is to let you know when your brake pads are worn out, so that you can change them before the brakes stop working entirely. Hey, that’s pretty considerate of them. There are a few types of indicators when your brake pads are wearing thin. We’ll cover the two main kinds: mechanical and electrical. Mechanical wear indicators are kind of funny. They’re just pieces of metal built into the brake pad that scrape against the rotor to make a screeching noise when the pads are running thin. Not fun to listen to, but it gets the job done. Electrical indicators are actual sensors built into or attached to the brake pads. They monitor the wear and tear of the pads, and send a signal to the car’s computer when the pads are nearly dead. That signal leads to a warning light illuminating on the dashboard. Since these indicators are part of the brake pad system, they don’t really need to be replaced on their own. They should simply be replaced when the brake pads are replaced. Since most indicators are built into the brake pads, that just means one replacement.

Sympoms of failing Brake Pad Sensors

Screeching brakes

Mechanical brake pad wear indicators will screech and wail at you when the brake pads are nearing the end of their life. I’m sure you’re just dying to hear it. Look, when your brakes start making noises, that’s a sign that something is wrong, and it should be addressed immediately. But again, that’s what the brake pad sensors are for: to let you know when something is wrong before it’s dangerously wrong.

Brake pad warning light

We all do it. Take a glance at a warning light in the dashboard and continue on our way. If your brake pad warning light comes on, it’s usually because an electrical brake pad sensor has determined that the pads are wearing thin, and need to be replaced.

How urgent is Brake Pad Sensor replacement?

Brake pad sensors or indicators don’t really need to be replaced on their own, because they’re part of the brake pads themselves. But when the brake pads need to be replaced? Yeah, that’s urgent. How else will you bring your 4,000-pound piece of machinery to a stop after going 60 mph? Listen to your brake pad sensors when they start talking (or screeching) to you.
