What is a Brake Master Cylinder?

The brake master cylinder is a critical part of your brake system, and one that helps your car make up for the fact that you’re not that strong, pal. Modern brakes rely on hydraulic pressure, which is just a cool way of saying that your car uses brake fluid and the brake booster to give your foot superhuman power when you hit the brake. As you depress the brake pedal, a pushrod in the master cylinder sends brake fluid to the brake calipers, where the pressure gives the caliper or wheel cylinder the necessary power to the brake and slow down the car.

Symptoms of a Bad Brake Master Cylinder

Misbehaving brake pedal

You might be able to feel a problem with the brake master cylinder. Look, there’s not much worse than when you’re driving your car and your brake pedal doesn’t feel right. Brake pedals are like parachute handles - you kind of need them to do their job or you’re SOL. If your pedal feels soft, or if it offers no resistance at all, then the brake master cylinder may be malfunctioning.

Leaking fluids

Leaky fluids are the bane of every car owner’s existence. A bleed or fluid leak in your vehicle's brake system reservoir can come from a number of things, including a faulty master cylinder. Leaking brake fluids could be a sign that it is time for a replacement master cylinder. Replace a faulty old brake master cylinder to make sure there is no other problems with your brake pads, brake booster, vacuum, brake lines, brake fluid or any other part of your brake system.

The brake warning light is on

Hey Sherlock, here’s some shocking news: When your brake warning light comes on, a sensor is hinting that there might be something wrong with your brakes. That something wrong with your brake system just might be the master cylinder. Get your auto technician to check your brake master cylinder and diagnose the brake warning light.

How urgent is a Brake Master Cylinder replacement?

When should you replace your brake master cylinder with a new master cylinder? We shouldn’t need to have this talk, but here we are. No matter how many hours you’ve put into Mario Kart, you still need brakes on your car. No brakes, no master cylinder, no stopping. No stopping and…well, you do the math.

The master cylinder is a crucial part of your brakes! A malfunctioning brake master cylinder can result in total loss of brakes. Don’t risk a malfunctioning brake system, and get your vehicles master cylinder taken care of by a repair shop or auto technician without driving it any further.
