What is a Brake Drum?

Think of drum brakes like the little brother of disc brakes. Maybe the backup quarterback to the disc brake’s star. They get less attention and glory, and, if we’re being honest, it’s kind of fair that way. Still, brake drums are important. They’re part of your braking system which, you know, is pretty vital if you value your life. Brake drums exist only on some cars, and are usually only on the back wheels. When you hit the brake pedal, hydraulic fluid runs to the wheel cylinders at the brake drums. The pressurized fluid makes the wheel cylinder apply force to the brake shoes, which press against the brake drum, using friction to slow it down. Since the drum is attached to the wheels, this helps bring your car to a stop.

Symptoms of failing Brake Drums

Scraping noises

Don’t you just love weird noises coming from your car? Yeah, we all do. Brake noises are at least easy for you to spot as they only happen when you brake. Wow. Is your brain blown yet? If you notice a scraping noise - think the sound of your spatula as you try to scrape off those eggs you accidentally overcooked - when braking, it may be the drums. That’s because the friction is causing wear and tear, and now you’re hearing the sweet, sweet sound of metal on metal action.

Low brake pedal

Does your brake pedal feel lower than it should be? Do you think you’re going crazy? You might be! But you also might have a case of worn out brake drums creating excessive amounts of clearance between the drum and the brake shoe.

Pulsating brakes

Ahh, pulsations. Not what you want your foot to feel when trying to bring your 4,000 pound piece of machinery to a halt. Pulsating comes from uneven wear and tear that creates inconsistent contact.

Parking brake failure

If the brake drums are extremely worn, then they may not make any contact with the brake shoes. And then the parking brake won’t work, which...well, hopefully you’re parked on flat land.

Soft brake feel

Sometimes worn brake pads can result in a spongy feel when you depress the pedal. Sponges aren’t a fun feeling on your feet, especially when you’re driving.

How urgent is Brake Drum replacement?

Take a moment and think about driving with brakes that aren’t working. Just think about it, I’ll wait. Yeah, not good, is it?
