How does the Exhaust system work?

The exhaust system routes spent gases away from the engine and out the tailpipe. Along the way, those fumes are cleaned up by the catalytic converter, which is an exhaust component designed to reduce harmful emissions. Most modern exhaust systems contain exhaust manifold (s), catalytic converter (s), muffler (s) and a series of pipes. There’s also a resonator that’s typically built into the muffler. The exhaust manifold bolts to the engine cylinder head and directs gases to the exhaust pipes and catalytic converter. System noise is conditioned and reduced by the muffler and resonator located near the tailpipe.
